My son went through a really, really tough period in his life with a lot of seizures, and we were up at like five different medications at this point, and things were just really bad. Hundreds of seizures every day. He was so unhappy.
And I remember I asked the doctor, I said, “Listen, I think we might just need to do like a total reset. We need to just get off all of them and start fresh.” And his doctor was definitely like, “You know, that’s pretty dangerous. I don’t know if I recommend it, especially with a kiddo like Owen who already has like so much active epilepsy.” And I really just like pushed for it because at that point, I felt like I couldn’t even evaluate if the treatments were working.
When you’re on like five or six different medications that are all supposed to do the same thing and none of them are doing seemingly anything. So we worked together and we came up with a plan that involved basically admitting him, like, right when we got out of a therapeutic range on all the drugs, and then we ended up in hospital for a couple of days where we got him off everything and started fresh, and it ended up being a really great move for my son, and it helped us find medications that really were working. It was a little bit of a risky situation there for a minute.
